Environmental Photographer of the Year open for entries

Photographers and filmmakers have until 31 March 2014 to submit their entries for this year’s Environmental Photographer of the Year competition.

The overall winner will be awarded a £5000 prize and there are additional cash prizes including two £1000 prizes awarded to the Environmental Film of the Year and Young Environmental Photographer of the Year (under 18).

In addition, this year the competition will award two further prizes: the £1000 Atkins Cityscape Prize, and The Forestry Commission England Exhibition Award in which a photographer will be invited to exhibit a solo show in one of England’s public forests.

Launched in 2007 by the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM), the competition gives photographers and filmmakers the chance to share their images and films of environmental and social issues with an international audience.

This year the competition, which is sponsored by design, engineering and project management consultancy Atkins, is free to enter.

Entrants are invited to submit up to ten still photographs or films through an online submission process. Entries will be judged on impact, composition, originality, creativity and technical ability. Previous entries have examined issues such as sustainable development, biodiversity, poverty, climate change, human rights, culture, natural disasters and population growth.

Successful entries will be displayed at the Royal Geographical Society in London in June 2014, followed by a national tour of forest venues.

The shortlisted photographers will be announced at the end of April.

The deadline for entries is 5pm on 31 March 2014.
