First winners announced in Sony World Photography Awards 2013

The World Photography Organisation has announced the winners for the Open, Youth and 3D categories of the 2013 Sony-sponsored World Photography Awards. The organization announced a shortlist for all the categories last month, and will be announcing the professional category winners at Somerset House in London on April 25th. The 2013 Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition will open a day later, and will run from April 26th – May 12th at Somerset House in London.

Youth Category

The aim of this category is to discover budding photographers, and in doing so, the WPO hopes that the award will expose their work of young photographers to a larger audience. One overall Youth Photographer of the Year will be selected from the three winners and this will be announced at the awards ceremony on April 25th.

Alecsandra Raluca Dragoi from Romania. Dragoi is one of the three winners in the Youth category.

Open Category

The Open category is intended for amateur photographers. This year’s winners were selected from around 55,000 entries by amateur photographers across the globe. A selection of photographs will be exhibited in London at the Winners’ Exhibition. The Open Photographer of the Year will be selected from the ten images and will receive $5,000 (USD).

Krasimir Matarov from Bulgaria. Winner of the Open category – Nature and Wildlife Martina Biccheri from Italy. Winner of the Open category – Architecture

3D category

Images in this category represent work of photographers who have embraced 3D imaging. Slovenian photographer Matjaž Tančič’s image Time Keeper won the award for this category. According to the photographer, this image is inspired by the setup of Hui-style living rooms in the old village houses of Yixian, China.
