Reply to Sigma 17-70 contemporary vs sigma 17-50 on d7100

I have the Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 and used it heavily on my Nikon D300s bodies. Its a fine lens and maintains a constant f/2.8 aperture throughout its zoom range. I like it a lot and always recommend it to someone looking for fast glass in this zoom range at a price that won’t break the bank.

A good friend has the Sigma 17-70 zoom and used it on her D7100 body. She liked it a lot also. This lens is only f/2.8 at its widest setting (17mm) and drops down to f/4 as you zoom to 70mm.

Both lenses seem to be about the same size and weight. In my opinion the fast, constant f/2.8 aperture of the 17-50mm is always useful yet sometimes its nice to have the extra focal length of the 17-70. I think that the 70mm setting is better for people and portraits.

I don’t think you can go wrong with either lens on you D7100.
